New Antioxidant Report and Its Affect on Anti-Aging Skin Care

Filed Under Skin Care Articles, Skin Care Tips |

Once again, we are presented with a lesson in how to dig a little into the sensational news headlines that we are bombarded with. Earlier this week, a report out of Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark reported that not only were antioxidants not a valid free radical preventative, but that they may, in fact, hasten death. Pretty scary stuff until you actually read beyond the headlines.

In actuality, while this study has been the topic of many news headlines and leading stories on the morning and evening news shows, very few reports actually took the time to lay out the fact s of the report.

The results of the study showed a higher risk of death for people taking vitamins: 4 percent for those taking vitamin E, 7 percent for beta carotene and 16 percent for vitamin A. The actual cause of death in most studies was unknown, however. The study’s senior author, Dr. Christian Gluud of Copenhagen University Hospital, said that most of the studies didn’t reveal why those taking supplements died, but “in all likelihood, what they died from is what people normally die from, maybe accelerated arthroscleroses, maybe cancer.”

Some experts who reviewed the research were dismissive of the increased death risk and the analysis overall, saying it pooled studies that were too diverse. Meir Stampfer, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, said the studies were too diverse to pool together because they looked at various combinations and doses of antioxidants tested in different groups of people. The trials ranged from a three-month study of 109 elderly nursing home residents to a 12-year study of 22,071 male doctors. “This study does not advance our understanding, and could easily lead to misinterpretation of the data,” said Stampfer, who was not connected to the new report.

After all the results (or lack thereof) were in, the bottom line is what doctors and health professionals like Alice Lichtenstein, a professor of nutrition science and policy at Tufts University who was not involved with the research, have been saying for years..essentially the best way to get the amazing antioxidant benefits in free radical prevention, is to absorb them in their natural delivery such as fruits, vegetables and juices.

In addition, a report by dermatologists at The Cleveland Clinic states that topical antioxidant application found in anti-aging skin care products tend to absorb directly into the cells that are most benefited by the free radical damage control and are significantly more effective than vitamins that must travel throughout the body to disperse the free radical control. Antioxidants are thought to protect the skin by attaching themselves to free radicals, minimizing the harm they do to the skin.

The lesson here is to stop looking so closely for the wrinkles and fine lines on your face and spend more time looking for the wrinkles and fine lines in sensational news stories!
